Spanish Influence in Morocco

Today we'll be talking about the influence of Spain throughout Morocco's history and how it remains in modern Moroccan culture. The closest nation across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco is Spain, so of course the two countries have been interacting with each other throughout history. Though much of this interaction has been defined by war and conflict, cultural exchange with Spain's Islamic minority has led to prominent advances in art, literature, and of course cuisine.

French Influence in Morocco

Today we'll be talking about the influence of France in Moroccan culture. Morocco's location and bountiful natural resources have long made it a sought after land by many European nations, including France. Cultural exchange between France and Morocco dates as far back as the 10th century, when French monk Gerbert d'Aurillac studied Islamic culture at the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in the city of Fes. French influence would become a mainstay in Morocco, with the adoption of the French language for use in foreign trade and business. France also held colonial power in Morocco until independence in 1956. Today relations between France and Morocco remain friendly and are based largely on tourism and economic trade.

Cultural Influences of Morocco

Today we will be talking about what makes Moroccan culture so distinct from the rest of the world. As mentioned yesterday, Morocco's geographical location has historically made it a hotspot for both cultural and economic exchange. WIth such a premier global location, Morocco also has a wide array of spoken languages. This includes Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, Berber, and French. Coupled with a rich history in language comes a rich and diverse cultural heritage of art, music, literature, and of course exquisite cuisine.

Introduction to the country of Morocco

In order to better understand the cuisine and atmosphere at Morocco's Restaurant, this week we will be exploring the geographical and cultural background of the Kingdom of Morocco. Located on the north western coast of Africa, Morocco has long been a melting pot of cultures between Arabic, European, and African countries due to its location and diverse landscape. The landscape of Morocco includes coastal beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, the vast Atlas Mountains, and the Western Sahara dessert. Morocco is not without its populous urban cities either. The largest city in Morocco is the world renowned Casablanca, whose population is 3.2 million. With a beach to the Atlantic Ocean and many cultural landmarks, Casablanca is a premier travel destination in Morocco. I will soon explore more of the rich geographic and cultural influences that make up the Kingdom of Morocco.
